In accordance with Hindu mythological narratives, there is a tale where the planet Mars (Angaragan, one of the Navagrahas) succumbed to a severe ailment and became distressed. In response to his concern, an ethereal voice advised him to seek solace at the temple of Vaitheeswaran Kovil. Upon visiting this sacred site, Mars found healing through the divine intervention of Lord Shiva, who manifested as a celestial physician alongside his consort Parvathi. Consequently, the deity at this location is reverently known as Vaitheeswaran, denoting the divine healer. The name Pullirukku Velur is derived from the worship rendered by Pul (Jadayu), Rikku (Rig Veda), Vel (Lord Murugan), and Oor (Sun God) at this temple. According to belief, to remedy incurable maladies, Uma assumed the form of Thaiyal Nayagi, bearing a vessel containing a herbal solution, the potent sanjeevani herb, and sanctified soil from beneath the Vilva tree (Botanical name: Aegle marmelos). At this shrine, Lord Shiva manifested as Vaidyanathar, signifying the divine doctor. Presently, the temple retains its reputation for healing diverse ailments, attracting devotees who gather on 'Kiruthigai' (Karthigai, the third star of the 27). The deity Selva Muthukumaraswamy, representing Lord Murugan, enjoys widespread recognition. Special rituals are conducted in his honor during the auspicious occasion of the Karthigai star. The sandal paste, particles of consecrated soil, and sidhamirtham are renowned for their therapeutic properties. Among the Navagrahas in Hindu mythology, this shrine is particularly esteemed for its association with Angaragan (Sevvai – the planet Mars). The temple operates from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Key festivals observed include Skanda Shashti, the appearance of Angaragan on his divine vehicle (Aattukidavahanam) every Tuesday, Aadipooram, Navarathri, Karthigai, and Thai (a month in the Tamil Calendar). These occasions mark the celebrations dedicated to Muthukumaraswamy and the Panguni Festival.
